Hendrix Restaurant and Bar

When you hear the word “rotisserie,” chicken is probably the first thing that comes to mind—and not in a particularly fine dining sense either. Hendrix will certainly turn that concept on its head for you. When you walk into the restaurant, you’re greeted by a huge rotisserie that showcases whole chickens, porchetta, and an entire leg of lamb. It’s a sight and smell that’ll make you salivate, and what this protein turns into will make your jaw drop altogether.

Rotisserie protein might turn into the Leg of Colorado Corn Fed Lamb which is dressed in mint-garlic labneh and au jus, or in the beautiful Pork Belly accompanied by pickled veggies. Rotisserie isn’t the only thing on the menu either. Soups, salads, and mouthwatering starters like the Hamachi Crudo will make deciding what to order an existential crisis.

L’Hirondelle Restaurant

Technically just outside Laguna Niguel in San Juan Capistrano, L’Hirondelle has been offering continental cuisine with a strong French and Belgian influence since 1982. The Bistro K

Every dish has its story and, often, the places where we dine have stories that are just as interesting; Bistro K is one of these places. The restaurant’s story starts with three brothers who all grew up loving to cook, so much so that their competition to prepare the best dishes led them on enriching journeys as chefs throughout the world. One brother, Tony Bagatta, eventually made his way down to SoCal from Cape Town, where his establishment would be a popular destination for some big names—Jerry Lewis and Neil Armstrong, to name a couple. His daughter, Katia, would also inherit this love for cuisine, and came to welcome happy guests into Bistro K in 2008.

Folks Pizzeria

Every town needs their favorite pizza joint, and Costa Mesa certainly has one of their own. Chef Joey Booterbaugh brings the flavor with some naturally leavened dough that might very well be the secret to these memorable pies.

Located inside THE CAMP, expect to find both red and white pies, from a classic margherita pizza to a soppressata pizza sporting olives, fontina, mozzarella, basil, and chili oil. Don’t miss out on the salads and desserts either—this menu’s full of gems.

Din Tai Fung

Chains can be hit or miss, but most chains can’t boast a prestigious Michelin Star. Din Tai Fung, famously, can! This international and excellent steamed noodle joint has locations in a few lucky cities from Taiwan to Australia, South Korea to Japan, and, of course, right here in Costa Mesa.

Whether you’re driving through or you’re a Costa Mesa resident, this is certainly one food spot you can’t miss. From the spicy wontons to the Xiao Long Bao and, of course, the dumplings, there’ll be something new to blow your mind (and your tastebuds) every time.

Taco María

No SoCal restaurant list is complete without an upscale Mexican-inspired menu, and again, Costa Mesa is ready to impress. Taco María is a local gem scoring yet another Michelin Star for the list, boasting the impressive cuisine of Chef Carlos Salgado, which he calls Alta California.

Start off your meal with some aguachile or the spicy and mouthwatering camarones a la diabla; Mole de pato tacos are an entrée that is sure to impress anyone; some delicious arroz con leche to finish. Orange County is known for a lot of amazing things. From the magic of the happiest place on Earth, to the stunning views on some of the world’s most beautiful beaches, to so many wonderful things to do and see in between, it’s no wonder that many Orange County communities are such coveted places to live and visit. Orange County is, of course, known for one other thing: money.

Alongside the beautiful sites and magical experiences, it’s no secret that it costs a pretty penny to live in many of the Orange County communities. So, whether you’re setting your goals high for a future residence or you’re getting ready for a career-located relocation to OC, here are some of the most affluent areas to live in Orange County.

Laguna Beach

A vibrant community full of artists and art-lovers alike, Laguna Beach is home to beach-lovers, cultural enthusiasts, amazing food like the incredible Mexican seafood establishment Las Brisas, and, of course, some high living costs.

Laguna Beach is the most expensive city on this list, with a median home price of about $2.7M and a median rent of about $2.3k. The median household income rests around a comfortable $186K, usually coming out of a 2-income home. Laguna Beach is a beautiful community with plenty to see and do each and every single day—but this beauty comes at a price!

Newport Beach

Maybe it’s having “Beach” in the name that drives prices up, but Newport Beach is second on our list. The city is famous for whale-watching, surfing, great foodie spots, fun hikes, and, appropriately, yachting.

Laguna Beach edges out Newport Beach due to recent economic trends, but to be sure: Newport Beach is not far behind. Median home price falls just over $2.2M with a median household income of about $127K. Although the tides may have shifted, Newport was once called the richest city in the US.

Dana Point

Third on our list and the first to not sport “Beach” in the name is Dana Point. Home to the longest running Festival of Whales on the planet, Dana Point is very well known for being a fantastic whale and dolphin watching spot.

Whales don’t pay rent, however, and Dana Point residents unfortunately do. The median home price here is just over $1.4M, with the median rent resting just above $2K and the median household income being just under $100k. These numbers are still certainly nothing to scoff at, but they are a noticeable step down from our other two cities listed above.

Wherever you go in Orange County, you’re bound to find similar numbers in many of the communities. Following on the list would be Rossmoor, Los Alamitos, San Clemente, and Villa Park. Las Flores is the first name that has a median home price below $1M (just barely). To be sure, however, these high prices are not for nothing. Between and around these valuable homes are even more valuable communities and experiences that give Orange County the shining reputation it has each and every day. Visit a park or lake

Mission Viejo has no shortage of fun and picture-perfect places to spend a day appreciating everything Mother Nature has to offer. Thomas F. Riley Wilderness Park, for example, is a great spot to enjoy the twilit paths at sunset, as well as the lovely butterfly garden and the animals that come out to say hi during less busy hours. O’Neill Regional Park is another great park to visit, and a favorite among hikers, birdwatchers, fishers, and nature lovers alike!

If sunrays breaking over a beautiful body of water is more your speed, Lake Mission Viejo might be the perfect spot for you. This is one of the most popular spots in the city for outdoor recreation, and it doubles as a pretty big concert venue, especially during the summer concert series. What’s an impressive community without great food? Luckily, Mission Viejo delivers. Whether you’re looking for something upscale or just a great slice of pie, there’s something special for everybody.

5 Hikes to Try in Newport Beach

The beautiful coastal city of Newport Beach is known for many things, from upscale shopping to its fantastic food scene. Its boat-filled harbor and two piers are favorites for ocean lovers and dazzling sunset chasers alike. Life on the coast is better in just about every way—even for hikers! Here are 5 hikes we think you should try while in Newport Beach.

Mountains to Sea Trail

This is a great hike for people looking to better get to know the region. The 22 miles of trail are mostly more-or-less flat since the intent is more to showcase and connect different spaces preserved by the Irvine Ranch, a historic site.

The well-known Back Bay Trail is actually a part of this larger trail, and you’ll find a Science Center located on Shellmaker Island. Overall, this is a fairly simple hike, but great for enjoying the Newport Beach weather and views, and for getting to know what the region has to offer.

Buck Gully Trail

This 5.2 mile trail is fairly short, but offers just enough of an incline to be a good workout. This is a great path to spot some of the local wildlife, from wildflowers to birds and other small animals. Make sure to bring your own water and use the bathroom before you head out, though!

The Buck Gully Trail is also a great chance to get to know the larger Buck Gully Reserve, a natural coastal canyon in the city. The Reserve has been an important part of the city’s history, passing ownership from the Irvine Company to the Country and, finally, to the City.

Newport Pier to Balboa Pier

Especially for visitors and newcomers to Newport Beach, the short walk from Newport Pier to Balboa Pier is an important one to get to know. It’s not a particularly taxing workout, but it’s an easy and active way of getting a look at what beach and coastal culture is all about.

Along the path, you’ll find everything from a surf school to a fresh fish market, as well as plenty of amazing local restaurants. Dory Deli and Il Farro are a couple of local favorites. Near the Balboa Pier end, you’ll also be able to check out the famous Balboa Fun Zone.

Crystal Cove State Park

This park is huge, nearly 4000 acres, and is home to some of the most beautiful views in Orange County—and maybe even in the state. Over 3 miles of natural beach makes it a great spot for surfers, swimmers, sunbathers, and, of course, hikers!

The 3 miles Bluff Trail takes you right along the coast and gives you Instagram-perfect views of the Pacific all along the way. Although the trail is somewhat short and relatively flat, it’s also unshaded, so don’t underestimate it! Make sure to cool off with a refreshing shake from the Crystal Cove Shake Shack.

Moro Ridge Loop

This trail is also in Crystal Cove State Park, but certainly deserves a section of its own. Experienced hikers looking for a challenge will love the 900 ft elevation gain of this 9.5-mile loop. Different trails intertwine throughout, allowing for a unique path every time. Making it to the top of the climb pays off with stunning views from the Emerald Bay Overlook. The climb back down is also rewarding, with beautiful views of the Pacific.

All things considered, Newport Beach is a great spot for hikers of all skill levels. Beginners and experts alike will be able to find a trail that suits their interests and skill sets, and the stunning views are always a welcome distraction from the tiring treks. Happy hiking!

Model planes and free model train rides are staples at the park too, and visitors love to birdwatch from the benches at the center of the park. One thing that truly sets the park apart is the annual Fish Fry each summer. Visitors can enjoy a fish dinner for $10 and proceeds go to local schools and community organizations.

Knott’s Berry Farm

Disney might take up all of the headlines, but we need to put some respect on California’s original theme park. Knott’s Berry Farm is a park that blossomed out of a humble berry farm, growing into a family theme park beloved by locals and visitors alike.

Enjoy the regular park attractions like rollercoasters and stage shows, and also the best park food you’ll ever have in your life. Fried chicken dinners, boysenberry treats, and some drinks your tastebuds will be grateful to experience. The park is great for the whole family!

Oak Canyon Nature Center

Amusement parks are a great time for everyone, but every once in a while we all need to touch some grass and get in touch with nature. Luckily, Anaheim has Oak Canyon Nature Center.

You’ll find this 58-acre natural park in Anaheim Hills, where you’ll be able to explore the multiple canyons, the miles of hiking trails, and all of the native wildlife. The John J. Collier Interpretive Center is also on site, a small museum full of regional natural history exhibits. Oak Canyon Nature Center is a perfect place to visit for anyone who needs a day full of fresh air.

Honda Center

There’s a sports lover in just about every family, and in Anaheim, the Honda Center is the place to be. Especially, of course, if your sports lover is particularly a hockey lover.

Home of the Anaheim Ducks, the sports center is a favorite for ice lovers all season long. Of course, as any stadium, events aren’t limited to hockey, either. Catch concerts, the Globetrotters, UFC events, and, being this close to the Happiest Place on Earth, Disney on Ice!

City National Grove

If you’re someone that’s always in the food for something new, then you’ll want to keep an eye on City National Grove of Anaheim. It’s a world-class indoor live-music venue that hosts artists, bands, and so much more.

This venue is a great place to catch plenty of musicians and bands, musical theatre, comedians, plays, and other events that beckon for the stage. Does Newport Beach, CA have a downtown?

Surrounded by many larger-than-life cities with famous downtown environments, it can be easy to think that every city in Orange County has an equally busy and compact downtown experience. Interestingly enough, however, almost the opposite is true! Newport Beach is no exception.

Downtown, of course, is generally where you’ll find a cluster of places to eat, places to shop, places of business, culture, and generally the center of action of the city. Whether this makes it a tourism spot or just a place where locals flock to work, grab a bite, and have a good time might depend on the specific city and region.

Not having an official downtown, however, does not mean that Newport Beach is a place with nothing to do, again, quite the opposite! All this means is that, unlike cities like Los Angeles, the popular things to do aren’t just concentrated in a few zones, they’re spread out all over town.

Newport Beach is, first and foremost, a beachfront city. This means that beachside activities are more than popular! Visit Corona Del Mar State Beach for some soothing sunbathing and swimming, or The Wedge if surfing is more your speed. Whale watching is also hugely popular, and Newport Beach is considered one of the best whale watching sites in the country. Pop in and visit the boutiques and shops on Balboa Island, get your amusement park fill at Balboa Fun Zone, and enjoy some upscale shopping and dining in the Lido Marina Village.

To make a long story short, does Newport Beach have a downtown? No, not really. At least not in a traditional sense.
