Hikes You Have to Try in Lake Forest

Orange County is full of beautiful communities with incredible architecture and technology. Cities are full of diverse communities and shiny buildings offering some of the best of modern civilization—but sometimes, we just need to go on a walk through nature!

Luckily for those in and around Lake Forest, nature is the name of the game. Lake Forest is a very new city, only being officially incorporated in 1991, but the region has a rich history of being a beautiful environment, from the trees to the lake and the wonderful parks. So, if you’re looking for a great hike to take, this is the place for you! Here are some hikes you have to try in and around Lake Forest.

Serrano Creek Trail

For an intermediate trail that’s still got some kick to it, hikers will love Serrano Creek Trail. It runs 7km starting from the corner of Bake Parkway and Toledo Way and ending near the corner of Glenn Ranch Road and Portola. The trail is not shaded by trees and falls under direct sunlight, so make sure to take water, sunscreen, and other necessary items.

Dogs are welcome as long as they’re on a leash, but do be aware of your surroundings. The trail is shared by bikers and is also mountain lion and rattlesnake territory. The trail is always right between two major roads, however, so you’re never more than a quarter mile or so away from civilization.

Aliso Creek Bikeway

Somewhat easier than the last trail, Aliso Creek Bikeway is fairly true to its name. This trail is also about 7km long and is quite popular among bikers and runners—and is probably better suited to them. If you’re looking for an easy path to get some mileage in, this is a great option. Dogs are welcome on a leash.

It isn’t the most scenic of routes, but it connects Whiting Ranch Wilderness Park with O’Neill Regional Park, and has plenty of benches along the way should you need a break or two. This path is also generally stroller friendly.

Whiting Ranch Wilderness Park

For a bit more of a climb and some more mileage, the 20k Whiting Ranch Wilderness Park path is a great option. There are plenty of nice downhills to help you relax and move quickly, but the uphills might leave you out of breath.

This is not a bike trail, so you shouldn’t run into a lot of traffic. There should be water available, however, as well as the opportunity to scope out some wildlife. Bunnies and deer can be found along the trail, but also mountain lions and rattlesnakes. Be careful!

Arroyo Trabuco Trail

At just over 23km, this is the longest trail on our list, but not terribly difficult either. It runs parallel to Arroyo Trabuco Trail and, even though it cuts through some pretty densely populated areas, it isn’t the most populated trail. If you’re looking for a nice hike with some solidarity, this is a great option.

Water is available from the water fountains at the bathrooms and the climb isn’t too bad. The way back is relaxing, too, since most of the trail back is a nice downhill. Expect to catch glimpses of rabbits, deer, snakes, coyotes, tarantulas, and even owls.

Lake Forest is a wonderful city with plenty of green spots to enjoy nature, the weather, and get away from the city for a bit! These are our favorite trails for hiking, but there are certainly other great options in and near the city. Did we miss your favorite? Let us know!

3 Healthy Breakfast Places in Orange

As the name implies, the city of Orange in Orange County has been historically well known for being a big producer of oranges. What do we think of when you mention oranges? Orange juice and breakfast, of course! Luckily, Orange isn’t just a great place for oranges, there are plenty of great breakfast joints to start off your day healthy and tasty. Here are 3 healthy breakfast places in Orange!

Green Tomato Grill

Fast, healthy, and affordable. It seems that at just about any spot, you get to choose two of these. Not at Green Tomato Grill. All of the vegetables are cut in house, and all of the meat is butchered and marinated in house as well, meaning that they can keep prices down while offering fast, fresh, and healthy dishes to happy customers.

Their breakfast menu includes delicious items like breakfast burritos and gluten-free Belgian waffles. You can add some of the in-house made sauces to spice things up, like their Habanero Fire or the Chimichurri. The amazing avocado toast and the overnight oats are also served all day long—not just for breakfast.

Blue Bowl

What do you need first thing in the morning? Some people need a cup of coffee, others need a bowl of superfood. If you’re in the latter category, look no further than Blue Bowl! The founders were looking for a tasty and affordable meal to give you a boost of energy in the morning, and the acai bowl was the perfect fit.

At Blue Bowl, the team is committed to delivering value, to treating people well, and to having fun. No extra chargers for topics here, and you get amazing ingredients and amazing service every time. Craft your own custom bowl with your favorite base, granola, fruit, nut butter, toppings, and sweeteners, and don’t forget about the sidekicks! Grab some great hand-crafted cold brew or some seasonal kombucha among other great items.

Loving Hut

Finally, you should definitely check out Loving Hut, an establishment dedicated to both World Vegan and World Peace. It is one of their core values to serve delicious and 100% plant-based meals using only natural and healthy ingredients. What better way to start off the day than by respecting and protecting Mother Earth? Spring and summer rolls, delicious salads, and a selection of refreshing drinks. What’s not to love?

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and that probably means that there are a lot of great breakfast joints in Orange that aren’t on this list. Did we miss your favorite? Reach out and let us know!

3 Attractions in the City of Orange

Orange County has no shortage of interesting cities, and the city of Orange is no exception. Appropriately, the city is historically well known for producing large amounts of oranges, and despite recent growth in business and being home to Chapman University, one of the most attractive qualities of Orange is its small-town charm.

Orange is perhaps most well known for its International Street Fair which draws visitors from all over to celebrate culture from around the world. If you aren’t around for the Street Fair, however, there are still plenty of things to do and see! Here are 3 attractions we think everybody should check out while in Orange.

The Plaza

Orange’s charm as a small-town community might seem paradoxical at first, because the population of over 100 thousand people seems to tell a different story. Nevertheless, this reputation comes from the lovely and carefully preserved heart of the city: The Plaza.

The city is one of California’s oldest, and The Plaza honors this legacy by maintaining the style and architecture that has formed the basis for Orange for over a century. While you’ll find modern shops and businesses, even the Starbucks building looks like it’s been pulled out of a history book. The Plaza is the social epicenter of Orange, and you’re bound to find all sorts of activities being held here.

Hilbert Museum of California Art

Speaking of celebrating culture, Orange is also home to the Hilbert Museum of California Art. Founded not too long ago in 2016, the museum hosts a collection of oils, watercolors, and drawings depicting everyday landscapes of the Golden State through the eyes of California artists.

Co-founder Mark Hilbert says: “this [is] the first museum anywhere that is totally dedicated to the display of California Scene and California representational art. The intent will be to cast a spotlight on this style of painting and these amazing artists, and to make this art known around the world. California has its own style, its own light, its own distinct landscape.”

Orange County Zoo

Who doesn’t love the zoo? The city of Orange is also home to the Orange County Zoo located inside Irvine Regional Park. This zoo houses animals native to the southwestern US, and is dedicated to keeping them healthy and well. Most of the animals are injured or not releasable into the wild for one reason or another, so it’s a good thing they have such a caring home and family at the OC Zoo! Expect to see a bald eagle, a mountain lion, and a black bear on your visit.

Of course, there are more sights to see when visiting the wonderful city of Orange—these are just our favorites. Did we miss yours? Let us know!

3 Restaurants the Whole Family Will Love in Garden Grove

Garden Grove in Orange County is a wonderful city with a lively and diverse population. The large Vietnamese-American population sets the stage for Orange County’s Little Saigon, and the various stage theaters make Garden Grove a popular destination for theater enthusiasts everywhere. Theater isn’t the only artform that Garden Grove takes seriously, though.

Food is an important part of any creative culture, but in Garden Grove, foodies are celebrated. There are delicious and unique options for just about any crowd, including families. Here are 3 great restaurants in Garden Grove that the whole family will love!

Louie’s on Main

Who doesn’t love burgers? Sandwiches? Tacos? Chicken nuggets? You get the idea. At Louie’s on Main, there’s always something for everybody on the menu—for adventurous and picky eaters alike. There’s great beer and drinks on the menu for the adults, but the sit-down environment is great for the whole family.

Try the mouthwatering Cubano sandwich; the 1/3 pound Dean’s burger with bacon, avocado, and grilled onion; or the Baja Shrimp tacos with salsa verde and pico de gallo. There are vegetarian items clearly marked on the menu, too, so nobody feels left out.

Augustino’s Italian Restaurant

Nothing says “family meal” like Italian food, and once you try Augustino’s, you’ll see why it’s the most popular Italian spot in the city. Great pasta, hot pizza, and some mouthwatering garlic knots—what more could you ask for?

From the classic Margherita pie to the controversial Hawaiian pizza, everyone can find something they love on the menu. Delicious calzones, Philly cheese steak sandwiches, Italian subs, and Manicotti. Don’t forget to order some tiramisu and cannoli for dessert!

Bird Talk Chicken

There’s something special about chicken that just finds its way across countries, across cultures, and, of course, across families. A sit-down family staple in any presentation, chicken is a great option for any family meal, and at Bird Talk, only perfectly cooked pieces make it out of the kitchen.

Order some obligatory chicken sandwiches, some tenders for the kids, wings, sides like fried pickles and loaded tots, and even a whole chicken if that’s what you need. With many sauces to choose from, your whole family will be licking their fingers clean by the end of the meal.

We mentioned that there’s a whole lot of good food in Garden Grove, and that was no lie. These are our favorite picks for great places to eat with the whole family, but there are certainly more restaurants to visit. Did we miss your favorite? Let us know!

4 Fun Things to do with the Family in Garden Grove

The Orange County city of Garden Grove is particularly well known for its dedication to theater, with theater enthusiasts being able to enjoy various performances at the three local stage theaters. Stage plays aren’t always the easiest events to attend with children, however. Luckily, Garden Grove is also home to many children and family friendly events and activities that you’ll love to explore! Here are 4 fun things to do with the family in Garden Grove.

Historic Main Street

Museums can be difficult to visit with children, but that doesn’t mean you can’t still explore a piece of history on a family trip. Garden Grove’s historic main street is a great way to turn back time and find yourself surrounded by period buildings, antique shops, and vintage memorabilia.

From restaurants to theaters, there are all sorts of businesses you’ll find while walking down main street. You’ll also be able to catch different events like live shows as well as the classic car show every Friday night. There’s almost always something to see!

Atlantis Play Center

If you’re looking for something to really tire your kids out, especially when there’s heat, look no further than the Atlantis Play Center! With all of the traditional aspects of a great park plus a splash pad, a fun theme, and plenty of shade, this will definitely be one of your kids’ favorite parks in no time.

There’s plenty of room for picnics, which makes it a great spot for the whole family. Many people also love how safe the park feels, especially since children are only allowed with adults and adults are only allowed with children. The ocean theme also gives the park a special charm that everybody loves.

Garden Grove Strawberry Festival

If you happen to be in town during Memorial Day weekend, the Garden Grove Strawberry Festival is an event that you can’t miss! Garden Grove’s roots are in agriculture, and this festival celebrates that history and the famous strawberries many decades later.

There are loads of fun and quirky events to enjoy, like the Strawberry Stomp 5k, the parade, and many live music performances. The Berry, berry beautiful baby contest and the Red headed round up contest are another couple of quirky events that make the festival all the more memorable!

Nickel! Nickel! 5 Cent Games

There’s something a bit nostalgic about an arcade setting that makes it quite a bit of fun for children and parents alike. Luckily, in Garden Grove, you can enjoy this experience with the whole family at Nickel! Nickel! 5 Cent Games. From Pinball to more modern racing simulations, there’ll be something for everybody to enjoy, and an impressive redemption counter to take something home as well!

The diverse city Garden Grove has so much to offer in so many ways, and while these are our favorite family-friendly activities, these certainly aren’t the only family things to do in town! Did we miss your favorite ones? Reach out and let us know!

nis courts, and even an area specifically designated to model gliders. Laguna Niguel Regional Park is the perfect spot to plan your day-at-the-park all year round.

3 workout studios to visit in tustin

We’ve all had that problem. Maybe you haven’t found the time to pick up an exercise routine in a while, maybe you’re new in town, or maybe the weight training just isn’t for you. Whatever the reason might be, you’re looking for a new workout studio. Luckily, there are plenty of great options in and around Tustin that can fit all sorts of preferences. Here are 3 we think that everybody should consider!

UnionRYDE

Some might remember how quickly the spinning revolution flooded the fitness space, and for good reason. An intense workout to great music alongside people with the same mindset—what’s not to like? UnionRYDE is proud to continue this tradition, but in a way that’s always fresh and innovative. Founder Mindy Ferrantelli is an innovator in the spinning culture, after all, having pioneered the popular out-of-saddle spinning style.

If spinning is the kind of workout you need in your life, UnionRYDE is bound to get you hooked on their culture of hustle, and their dedicated instructors, and their great community. As their site says, “the studios are gathering places for RYDERS, and strangers often leave as friends.”

Enerji Barre

Maybe riding isn’t quite your style, but the music sounds like fun—we totally get that! If this sounds like you, you might want to check out Enerji Barre for Barre classes, HIIT, Pop Pilates, and their Dance Club Cardio. If you’re somebody that’s looking for a lot of fun and a lot of sweat, this might be the place for you.

The team describes the workout as “a high cardio dance party.” You’ll hit some light weights, workout at the barre, and finish out with abs and stretching. It’s high energy and full body, so definitely expect to be sore in the morning.

Caffe Yoga

For a slightly more static exercise experience, check out Caffe Yoga. This yoga studio sets out to be quite unique, with unique touches put together by local artists that might make the studio feel like a home away from home. Caffe Yoga promises to be a place with no judgment or expectations, where you can come and be yourself.

A variety of classes allows you to select the exercise that you’re looking for. Need something light and relaxing? Try the Reset and Restore class. Some more challenging strength building? Yogalates Fusion is a great option. With plenty of options and dedicated yogis, there’s a great class and exercise available for everybody who walks through the door.

We consider these to be some of the most unique and exciting workout studios you can find in Tustin, but there are certainly more options to explore. Did we miss your studio of choice? Let us know!

Historical Stops You Should Check Out in Tustin

The cities of Orange County are dazzling displays of modern coastal cities and master-planned communities, but preserved and tucked behind all of this modernity is a gem that any OC local and tourist should visit: Tustin. Officially founded in 1868, the city of Tustin has held on to its small-town heritage, and has worked hard to preserve this ticket back to simpler times. Just visiting Tustin is an experience in and of itself, but there are certainly small important spots to check out to get the most out of your expedition. Here are some historical stops in Tustin that you should visit!

Red Hill

This is less of a monument that you can visit, but a significant landmark nonetheless, and one that tells the history of the city of Tustin. Now the grounds for a developed neighborhood, Red Hill gets its name from the mercuric sulfide in the soil that gives the soil a reddish color. Established a historical landmark in 1935, the hill’s history certainly goes back much further.

Indigenous legends tell of how the hill was used as refuge when the great flood covered the world. Spanish explorers described the hill as Cerritos de las Ranas in reference to the nearby swamp. The hill marked a boundary between three great ranchos, Santiago de Santa Ana, San Joaquin, and Rancho Lomas de Santiago. When Americans started to gain control of the land, the potential for mercury mining was recognized, and several mining attempts have taken place over the ages. Still, however, Red Hill stands strong and proud as, arguably, the oldest inhabitant of Tustin.

Old Town Tustin

Tustin residents are proud of the old-town heritage, and that includes the architecture. The area designated at Old Town Tustin is a curious site, preserving many of the building structures that date back to the 1880’s with a strong commitment to keeping this part of town a recognizable homage to California’s Gold Rush era heritage.

The buildings aren’t just for show, either, and that’s actually what makes Old Town Tustin particularly unique. Many of these old buildings are occupied by modern and trendy businesses, giving the town a very contemporary and vibrant energy encompassed in a historic visage.

Irvine Ranch Historic Park

Technically just outside of Tustin, the Irvine Ranch is another historic point of the region that has stood the test of time. A leading producer of many things, the Los Angeles Times declared the ranch to be one of the greatest cultivated farms in the world back in 1910. Today, you can visit the park and visit many of the historic buildings that helped keep this ranch so productive, like the Cogan House, the Mess Hall, and the Red Barn.

Having such a well-preserved piece of history is somewhat of a rarity in California, despite its rich and interesting heritage, making Tustin such an interesting little gem to visit. There are, of course, more snapshots of history in the city to take in—did we miss your favorite? Reach out and let us know!

Restaurants You Have to Try in Santa Ana

Known as the financial and government capital of Orange County, when you come to Santa Ana, you know that the city means business. You can’t pull off those titles on an empty stomach, however, and luckily Santa Ana has some great food that anybody can enjoy. Here are a few of our favorite restaurants in the city that you have to try!

Detention

Formerly known as Playground, Detention is an exciting and fresh dining experience. They describe themselves as a “boutique drinking and dining establishment,” and they proudly reject the status quo in order to chase their art and their work. Don’t let the laid-back atmosphere fool you, though. If you’re in Detention, you’re bound for a fantastic meal and drink.

Smoked ocean trout, dry-aged ribeye, gochujang glazed pork—just about everything on the menu is sure to make your mouth water. Grab a filet o’ shrimp or some onion rings if you’re just looking for a quick bar snack, and enjoy the selection of draft beer and house cocktails.

Chapter One: The Modern Local

For foodies and influencers alike, Chapter One: The Modern Local offers a vibrant selection of dishes and drinks that are just as good on the palate as they are on the eyes. The restaurant hosts live music events regularly, adding to the already great environment. Doors are open every day of the week, too.

Flatbreads and fish tacos, the infamous Royale with Cheese (resized appropriately), and some delicious steak and potatoes are all on the menu ready for hungry customers. Enjoy a Happy Ending with their delicious chocolate lava cake, or with an amazing white chocolate souffle.

Shabu Shabu

For a cool and not as represented dining experience, visit Shabu Shabu in Santa Ana. Thinly sliced meat and vegetables are served next to a bit of boiling water or dashi for guests to cook their meal right on the spot. Accompanying this freshly cooked bite with a bit of sauce makes for a flavorful and memorable mouthful.

The service is professional and the atmosphere is easy-going, great for relaxing after a long trip or work day. Order some sake, kick back, and enjoy your meal!

Ritter’s Steam Kettle Kitchen

For another great and unique dining experience that really packs a punch, visit Ritter’s Steam Kettle Kitchen. Primarily Cajun-style dishes with a regional flare, Ritter’s cooks their food in steam kettles right in front of the guests. Speak directly to the chef to learn more about the process, the food, and about how to get the most out of every bite!

Start out with some delicious chowder fries, bite down on a catfish po’ boy, and fill up on a perfectly prepared Jambalaya. Don’t forget to check out the house specialties: pan roasts and gumbo.

While there’s no way to make this list exhaustive, these four options have already got our mouths watering, and are four restaurants we think everybody should check out. Did we miss your favorite spot? Reach out and let us know!

4 Places To Visit In Santa Ana

4 Places To Visit In Santa Ana

Southern California has no shortage of beautiful scenery and amazing experiences to offer, and the city of Santa Ana is certainly no exception. The lovely Orange County weather coupled with the signature SoCal views would make any trip to Santa Ana time well spent on its own. Of course, as is the case across the OC, great weather and great views aren’t everything this wonderful city has to offer. There are plenty of entertaining and unique things to do and see while in town! Here are 4 places to visit in Santa Ana.

The Frida Cinema

Santa Ana is the second-most populous city in Orange County, and nearly 80% of that population is Latinx. Naturally, then, it makes sense that the culture of the city should reflect this lineage. The Frida Cinema is a great example of this.

Frida Kahlo was an iconic Mexican painter and a significant political icon whose legacy has been more than solidified in contemporary feminist and queer movements. Her dedication to art and perseverance are precisely what The Frida Cinema embodies, aiming to enrich and educate communities through cinema. No Hollywood movies here; as they say themselves, The Frida Cinema is “OC’s year-long film festival.”

The Discovery Cube

Enriching and educating communities is a multi-faceted effort, of course, and just as cinema is incredibly important to an enriched community, so is science. Formerly known as the Discovery Science Center, the Discovery Cube offers hands-on science exhibits that challenge, encourage, and educate children.

Although quality education at an early age is one of the Discovery Cube’s fundamental pillars, that certainly doesn’t mean that parents will be bored on the trip! There are plenty of interesting and exciting exhibits to explore, such as the Science of Hockey exhibit, the Dino Quest exhibit, and the Cloud Rings exhibit. At what age does creating clouds right in front of your eyes get boring?

The Santa Ana Zoo

There are few places as charming as a great zoo for children and parents alike, and the Santa Ana Zoo is a great option. This exotic walk through nature is a refreshing break from the urban and master-planned communities of Orange County.

As is often the case with zoos, the Santa Ana Zoo is dedicated to preservation efforts, housing multiple endangered species. These efforts are a great opportunity to focus public interest, as well as to support scientific advances that help protect these creatures against dangers like habitat destruction. The Golden Lion Tamarin, the Ring Tailed Lemur, and the Cotton Top Tamarin are a few examples of some of the beautiful endangered species you can bump into on your visit.

Blinking Owl Distillery

While we love kid-friendly options, not every option has to be kid-friendly! Here’s an example of a great place to visit for those of age: the very first craft distillery in Orange County. Even more so, Blinking Owl Distillery is one of the first Californian distilleries to hold a Type 74 Craft Distillers License, which means you’ll be able to enjoy tastings on the premises, as well as take home a bottle or two.

Certainly a place for spirit enthusiasts, you’ll find a small selection of award-winning bottles that are a special occasion in and of themselves. All locally sourced, Blinking Owl Distillery spirits include Blinking Owl Vodka, Blinking Owl Gin, Blinking Owl California Straight Bourbon, and Blinking Owl Aquavit, a Scandinavian tradition with a Californian twist.

Santa Ana is a wonderful city home to amazing gems like these and many more. These are our favorite places to visit while in town, but there’s certainly more to discover. Did we miss your favorite spot? Let us know!

5 Things to Try in Huntington Beach

With miles and miles of beautiful beach stretching along the Pacific, Huntington Beach is most popularly known for one beach-friendly activity: surfing. From the Beach Boys to Jan and Dean, pop stars seem to agree that the city embodies California and beach culture altogether. For fans of catching waves, there’s a reason Huntington Beach is nicknamed Surf City. For everybody else, there’s still plenty to do! Here are our 5 favorite things to try while in town.

Huntington Beach Pier

For a picture-perfect scene right in the middle of Surf City, look no further than the Huntington Beach Pier. This is one of the longest piers on the West Coast, and it’s a popular meeting spot for surfers, fishing enthusiasts, and general beach-lovers alike.

You can catch some waves nearby or just enjoy the beautiful view all day long. The pier is open to the public from 5 am to midnight, so make sure to catch the twilight sparkle on the Pacific for sunrise and sunset.

Downtown Huntington Beach

Some of the best hang spots tend to be in the downtowns of great cities, and Huntington Beach is certainly no exception. Looking for a place to shop, grab a bite, or get a drink? Downtown Huntington Beach is the place to be.

Visit Model Citizen for some beautiful beachwear, head over to 25 Degrees for some fantastic burgers and some killer cocktails, and get ready to enjoy the night among Huntington Beach’s lively nightlife.

Huntington Beach International Surfing Museum

You don’t get the nickname Surf City by being a passively popular location for surfers from all over, and fittingly, Huntington Beach also pays homage to this radical heritage by hosting the Huntington Beach International Surfing Museum.

Founded decades ago, this museum is a favorite spot to visit by dedicated surfers and enthusiastic fans from across the globe. The place is open from 12 to 5 every day of the week except for Monday, and hosts surf-related events throughout the year. Whether you’re looking to catch a wave or catch a glimpse of surf history, this museum will be a great visit for you.

Old World Village

Have you ever felt like you were born in the wrong time period? Or maybe you just wanted to visit another one? At Huntington Beach, you can! Just step into the Old World Village and explore Old World Europe—just minutes away from the beach!

Famous for and practically synonymous with the iconic Oktoberfest celebration, you’ll find loads of independently owned shops and specialty stores designed to transport you to another time. Make sure to visit the Gourmet Market, the wonderful and award-winning German cuisine and, of course, the 10,000 sq. ft. German Biergarten.

Huntington Dog Beach

Finally, you can rest easy knowing that your furry friend will be able to enjoy Huntington Beach, too! The pet-friendly Huntington Dog Beach is the perfect place to let your pup run and splash around alongside other beach-happy dogs, and it’s even located conveniently near some pet-friendly hotels. Who says you can’t take your pup on vacation?

From parents to surf fanatics and every beach lover in between, it should be clear that there’s something for everyone to enjoy here at Huntington Beach. That said, there’s no way we could have covered every amazing thing to do in Surf City. Did we miss your favorite activity? Reach out and let us know!
